The Racine Street corridor is a unique neighborhood with many charms and many challenges. In an effort to develop the corridor, our client commissioned BURHANIDESIGN to redevelop a vacant distressed 8 unit mixed-use building.
Our brief was to create affordable rental housing, restore the structure, and revamp the 3 commercial units on the first floor so that they could become sources of revenue.
We undertook feasibility studies and underwent several plan iterations with the client before closing in on a plan to create four units per floor. We designed four 2-bedroom units and four small 1-bedroom units with plenty of natural light and a contemporary open layout for the living area, dining area and kitchen.
We also renovated the three commercial units so that local small business owners could benefit from the transformed space. The project was completed on budget, and everyone, from the new tenants and to business owners and the community, are happy with this much needed restoration of the abandoned building in their community.
