When the patter of little feet turns into a loud roar, the family home should be able to evolve and adapt.

On the tree lined street of Oakley Blvd on the city’s west side, a Two flat building required extensive renovation to de-convert to a single-family home and meet the needs of a growing family.

We collaborated with the owners to understand the requirements of every member, right down to the youngest! The family enjoyed the vintage charm of the interiors but naturally wanted modern comforts and conveniences. They also needed smart storage and comfortable spaces for the family to spend time together.

BURHANIDESIGN redesigned the 2nd floor unit and added 2 bedrooms removing the existing kitchen and living room and opened up the demising wall and staircase on the 1st floor to connect to the living areas, converting this existing two-flat house into a large four-bedroom three bath house.

The kitchen and living room have plenty of built-in smart storage for when the parents need to whisk away toys and clutter before guests arrive. The kids’ bedrooms have open storage at lower heights so that little residents can store and sort their own things. Common areas like the kitchen and living room are left as open as possible to allow the flexibility to rearrange spaces as the day progresses.

Elegant fittings and light pine cladding and flooring add style to the space and yet are durable enough to look great for years.
