The Hermon Baptist Church has been in the same location for over 100 years, until the congregation sold the dilapidated building to local developers and bought some vacant lots on West Carroll Avenue and planned to move from its original location.
The congregation was facing some stiff opposition from the local community and thus we were commissioned to find design solutions which would not only be used for the congregation, but also be more inclusive to the local community in order for them for being able to engage with the congregation and use the building.
BURHANIDESIGN designed a community component to this building in the lower level. This space would be used by the local community and the youth, and it paved the way for the collaboration between residents and the church.
The design garnered significant support from the locals and the church project was started. It was designed to host the sanctuary on the second floor where light streams in through clearstory windows. The classrooms, offices and ancillary spaces are located on the first floor. Special care was taken that the exteriors were completed in red brick to complement the local architecture of the manufacturing district that surrounds it.
Keeping in mind that the project was for a not-for-profit client, the designs were created as simply and economically as possible. The congregation and local community will benefit greatly from the project, which is scheduled to Commence construction in 2021.
